The OLC School
The church building at Our Lady of Czestochowa is a landmark in Jersey City’s Paulus Hook neighborhood. This granite stone structure was built in 1831 and is one of the oldest continuous sites of worship in Hudson County. In 2009, it was recognized by the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy as a historic site.
A thriving Roman Catholic community developed in Jersey City during the 19th century, based on religious faith and cultural traditions. Many churches, schools, convents, and rectories were established throughout the city, serving a predominantly Polish population, many of whom had immigrated to the area during the early 19th century. As economic hardships grew and new immigration to the city became less pronounced, the Roman Catholic community began to decline.
However, a new wave of immigrants re-established themselves in Jersey City during the twentieth century. The Paulus Hook district became a distinct, heavily Polish neighborhood during this period. This influx of new residents and their increasing financial support for the parish enabled some of the aging infrastructures to be stabilized and restored.
Since its founding in 1918, Our Lady of Czestochowa has served an increasingly diverse community of parishioners. Its enticing location in Jersey City’s Gammontown district, excellent music ministry, and welcoming and family-friendly environment all contribute to its strong growth.
Its low student/teacher ratio and focus on individualized education ensure that each child receives high-quality instruction. Besides an excellent curriculum, the school offers many extra-curricular activities for students and parents, including athletics and after-school programs.
