Hawthorne of New Jersey is known for its small-town charm and convenient access to major metropolitan amenities. Various train and bus routes provide transportation to New York City, while local highways make it easy to access the rest of the state. The community is named for Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of classics such as “The Scarlet Letter.” While Hawthorne’s roots are firmly rooted in American history, it is also home to many international businesses and restaurants. The downtown area of Hawthorne features stacks of shops and salons along Diamond Bridge Avenue and quaint cottage-style cottages. Residents can unwind at Goffle Brook Park, which features 103 acres of scenic walking trails, sledding hills and picnic facilities.

There are a few private schools in Hawthorne and two public school districts. The Hawthorne Borough School District is the largest in the county, and its students have a high graduation rate. The public school system is rated “A” by the New Jersey Department of Education, and its students have high reading and math scores.
Private schools in the area include Pioneer Academy, Apple Montessori Of Wayne and Al-hikmah Continuation School. Residents of Hawthorne can also visit the Louis Bay 2nd Library to access various educational, cultural and technological resources.
Hawthorne’s local access television channel provides a bulletin board for non-profit organizations, emergency notifications and live broadcasts of municipal meetings. The city’s post office is located at 226 Diamond Bridge Avenue.
There are six banks in Hawthorne, including TD Bank, National Association and Glen Rock Savings Bank. Several auto dealers can be found in the city, as well. Residents can get to Newark Liberty International Airport in around 23 minutes, while La Guardia is about 30 minutes away. The city is considered a car-dependent area, so most errands require a vehicle. Residents who wish to save on gas can shop at the Hawthorne Commons, a local shopping centre with various stores and restaurants. A full-service grocery store is also located in the centre. Other shopping options include the nearby Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus.
